Route sources to headphones without accidentally doubling recorded audio.
Recommended starting point
Select the intended monitoring device and understand Monitor Off, Monitor Only, and Monitor and Output.
Before changing settings
- Update OBS Studio and the relevant Windows graphics or audio driver.
- Duplicate the current OBS profile so the working configuration remains available.
- Use a representative scene and change one variable at a time.
Step-by-step test
- Open OBS Statistics and reset its counters.
- Reproduce the busiest part of the real recording or stream.
- Run the test for at least ten minutes.
- Check rendering lag, encoding lag, dropped frames, audio meters, and the saved output.
- Record the setting and result before making another change.
How to verify the result
Test with speakers muted to prevent feedback, then inspect the recorded tracks.
Common mistakes
- Copying settings designed for different hardware or a different streaming platform.
- Testing only a static scene instead of the most demanding content.
- Changing resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate simultaneously.
- Ignoring the OBS log and Statistics window.
