OBS Recording and Streaming Settings

OBS x264 Encoder Settings

Written by the ProjectOBS Editorial Team · Published and reviewed: September 25, 2026

Choose an x264 CPU preset without causing skipped frames or game stutter.

Recommended starting point

Begin with veryfast, then test slower presets only when CPU headroom remains during the heaviest scene.

Before changing settings

  • Update OBS Studio and the relevant Windows graphics or audio driver.
  • Duplicate the current OBS profile so the working configuration remains available.
  • Use a representative scene and change one variable at a time.

Step-by-step test

  1. Open OBS Statistics and reset its counters.
  2. Reproduce the busiest part of the real recording or stream.
  3. Run the test for at least ten minutes.
  4. Check rendering lag, encoding lag, dropped frames, audio meters, and the saved output.
  5. Record the setting and result before making another change.

How to verify the result

Watch encoding lag, total CPU load, frame time, and audio continuity throughout the test.

Common mistakes

  • Copying settings designed for different hardware or a different streaming platform.
  • Testing only a static scene instead of the most demanding content.
  • Changing resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate simultaneously.
  • Ignoring the OBS log and Statistics window.
